spicy ramen challenge (staff edition)

hello everyone!

last week tech released the spicy ramen challenge (staff edition) on the asb youtube channel, and we'd appreciate your thoughts on it:

what went well:

- the staff members seemed to have had a fun time filming

- the video is a good way to learn more about Lynbrook staff members

what didn't go well:

- the video is very long (40+ minutes) so people could've lost interest (it was also more difficult to edit)

- some staff members might've prepared the ramen wrong, because some mentioned having "soup" when it should've been a sauce, which probably diluted it and made it less spicy (so next time adding instructions on how to prepare the ramen)

- we probably could've done more promotion, because we only posted a trailer on instagram

some questions for future versions:

- some staff members recorded themselves on their phone and some forgot to do so, so for the future would it be better to just keep the video in gallery view or try to have individual screens?

- was having 6-7 people per filming group too large? did each person answer enough questions?

thanks!

- tech

  1. hey tech,
great job on the video! i really liked the intro and the overall editing. i loved how teachers got a chance to share their fun stories and show their personalities. i do think 6-7 people per group is a bit large esp if they are each going to take a bit of time to share their own experiences. i did like how you guys had two groups of teachers. maybe you can consider splitting the vid into 2 parts instead of one giant one!

things to consider in the future:
    - i think the teaser video was a good idea! maybe editing a few highlight vids/funny moments and uploading it to IGTV would also be good for the sake of student attention spans
    - maybe we can have teachers do things together within their department? (e.g. mr pallone can hang out with mr lee or something LOL)

    i hope this helps :D

  2. Hello Tech!

Thank you for posting and editing such an amazing Staff Spicy Ramen Challenge! I really enjoyed both the production and the actual banters/questions that was going on between the teachers, and I guess the main point of feedback is that the video is kind of intimidating in length. It seems likely that if students were to see the trailer/promotion for the video and went to take a look, the 40-minute-ish runtime might scare them away from watching even when the actual comments and discussions are interesting.

As for the questions you posed, I thought that staying in gallery view the entire time was fine, especially because you could still see each individual relatively clearly and you might be able to catch some more interesting reactions from the rest of the teachers who aren't speaking.

    Fantastic job!

  3. helloooo tech,

spicy ramen challenge v2 was fire! it was really nice to see our teachers outside of the normal teaching setting for a change.

regarding time/grouping concerns, i think that the video definitely could've been cut shorter, students might have seen the 40 min mark on the video and felt less inclined to watch it. i was going to suggest the same thing as sarah, which would be to split up groups by department and release a separate video for each. that way, not only would the groups be smaller, but each teacher could get more screen/speaking time.

also, i think that keeping the video mostly in gallery view and cutting to an individual teacher if they have a particularly funny reaction helps keep viewer retention but makes sure that all teachers get screen time as well.

great job though! i love this series and hope to see it continue into next year :))

  4. hey tech!

i wanna first say that i love this whole idea. its original and fun. i do agree, however, that 40 minutes is too long to keep most students engaged. so to combat that, you could either cut down on the amount of teachers participating, or use sarah's idea about separate department videos. both would work, the latter just requires more work.

about staff preparing ramen wrong and forgetting to film themselves- you could send out a structured set of guidelines a week or so before. this would give them the time and resources to make everything go more efficiently.

    overall a spicy (haha) job!

first of all i want to say that i really enjoyed this video! i watched the entire 40 minutes bc it was actually pretty funny and i love asb <333 i know y'all mentioned this already but i think it's important to emphasize that 40 minutes is way too long. lowkey feel like all vids except hoco obv should be capped at like 10 maybe 15 mins bc otherwise ppl dont want to watch them. i think having less teachers and making it a smaller video or having multiple vids would have been more efficient. additionally, it may be interesting to use the ig live feature and have like more teaser clips to attract students to watch the full vid.
overall great job and keep doing what you do tech :) lots of love <333

  6. hi tech!

First of all, super cute video! I loved the editing and humor, but I definitely agree with the others that 40 minutes is too long. I think 10 minutes is probably as long as people can pay attention to (like a long PR video), but I know eating ramen + talking can take quite a while so maybe in the future you can try a food that's easier to eat like spicy chicken wings (if not vegetarian) or Spicy rice cakes. In super this video took lots of effort to edit, so I just wanna end this off by saying thank you and amazing job !!

  7. hi tech!

I thought this video was really well done, and it was very fun to watch. I do agree that the video was a bit long and lost a bit of entertainment value along the way, so if you continue to do this next year, I think the video should be around 15 minutes max. Also, I think you should have one-on-one conversations (like Hot Ones), and have a compilation of multiple groups in one video. Having 6-7 people made it hard to watch everyone. Hopefully you have different versions of this event in the years to come (in-person). I think it would be cool if it was happening during lunch with a live audience. Overall, you all did a really good job!

  8. Hey Tech!

You guys did an awesome job dropping another banger of a video with the Spicy Ramen Challenge Teachers Edition. I think at this point we can always just expect you guys to release quality content for every video. However, I will echo what some people said already in the comments above and say that 45 minutes might be a little too long to be attractive to some people. I know editing and filming a video that long will be definitely time consuming and difficult for you guys on the tech end as well. Additionally, I know you guys opened up question submissions to the entire student body but maybe for the next one we could just brainstorm as ASB different interesting question ideas that we could pose. I think something the student body is always interested in is if there are really engaging/interesting questions so we could definitely work together to come up with some if theres a lack of submissions.

    Good work guys!

  9. hi tech, your spicy ramen vids are always so good!! i love watching each new edition, and i think teachers do get left out so often, so it was nice to see them included. i think in the future, shortening the length and adding more graphics could make the videos more engaging to watch. i also really liked the teaser you posted to the asb igtv; maybe next time, you can also include clips in the pr video as well to encourage more people to watch. i think making matching backgrounds for all the teachers along with with their name and position would also be cute and helpful for people who don't really know them. overall, you guys did a great job and i can't wait to see more!!

  10. hey tech!

spicy ramen challenge ii was fun as always :)) an alternative way to promote (which might require a bit more editing) could be to make a "trailer" that we put on instagram/facebook/announcements since people not familiar with the term might not know what they're getting into/be intimidated by the 40 min length but can still enjoy a small highlight.

great job— hope to see more in the future !!

  11. Hi Tech!!

The spicy ramen challenge was so good!! I really loved seeing all the teachers talk about their lives and I really enjoyed watching it. I agree that the video was pretty long, although personally I still found it really interesting to watch and actually enjoyed the length. I think next time maybe just release the video in two parts if you're going to have it be 40 minutes.

    But overall, amazing job!

  12. what's up tech!!

i think that the spicy ramen challenge video was super good! it was very interesting to go through the teacher edition to get a peek into the lives of some people that you may know only as someone there to give you information. the only concern i had regarding the video was its length, and i understand how a lengthy video is hard for you guys as well as the viewers in different ways, but i think that the viewer side- problems could be eliminated by separating some of the teachers. maybe that way you guys could generate some suspense and/or hype through previews

overall that was a great video :)

  13. Hey Tech,

Especially with the circumstances of the world, I think it was very nice to have a video introducing teachers more to the student body that hasn't necessarily met them. In my opinion it was a very good project. Regarding the length of the video I do agree with the common consensus that it was a little too long for student attention but that is a problem that I think could be easily fixed for future projects.

    Good job guys :)

  14. hi tech,

awesome event! i remember how fun it was for me and the cps at the beginning of the year, so i'm sure the teachers had a lot of fun!! some tips for future events like this:

    - i think videos should be kept to 3 minutes max or you should release a less-than-3-minute recap on the igtv. videos longer, even if the content is interesting, tends to be ignored by students, so we should try to cut them down as much as possible.

    - i totally understand how challenging it is to cut down 40 minutes worth of content, so maybe you can have a tech member in each room throughout the meeting that can mark the times something funny happened based on the "Recording" time shown on Zoom. this will make it much easier for the editor to pick the funny parts and edit + cut it down from there.

    - for the future of this event, it'll hopefully be in person, which will eliminate the problems with recording and soupiness, as you'll be able to make their noodles and record for them.

looking forward to seeing part 2 next year in person!!

  15. hi tech!

First of all, good job Pranay for the amazing editing! Spicy Ramen Challenge is a really fun event and I'm glad we were able to do both an ASB and Staff version this year. Hopefully next year we can have a student body edition of this event and host an in-person spicy ramen challenge. This challenge really revealed some teachers' personalities, which I'm sure students loved to see. I think having groups of 6-7 is fine, but the length of the video should definitely be cut shorter.
